Becoming fully vegan!

Okay, so today I’m going to write about a lifestyle change I’ve made. I’m  becoming a vegan! It’s a scary prospect, the idea of giving up pretty much all the foods I really enjoy, but I think it’ll be best for my future health and help me radiate a good energy! I’ve done plenty of research and genuinely think this could be a really positive change for me. I want to start vlogging about my progress as a vegan as I think it can have so many health benefits and people don’t know enough about it. Not only are you not contributing towards an industry of cruelty but it also makes you far more aware of all foods that you put in your body. My meals are so minimalist now and so easy to make! Here’s a documentary about a women who became raw vegan for 30 days and saw tremendous benefits. She started off with health ailments, fatigue, high stress levels and more weight than her ideal. The results the vegan lifestyle created were amazing and she managed to persuade her friends and husband to try it after the process. The documentary has many interesting facts about food and really helped me make my decision, check it out here 🙂 :

I’m going to post about how my health has been effected by this change and hopefully start vlogging about it soon!

If you’d like to keep updated with my progress just give my blog a follow! 🙂

You can’t have love without loss…

Today I want to write about loss and not specifically loved ones that I’ve lost (I’ve lost many for different reasons throughout my life). Although, I’ve never experienced the death of a loved one therefore I’m grateful for that. I want to kind of flip loss on it’s head to portray a more positive message.

In order to have lost something or someone you would in fact had to of cared for someone or had them in your life for a reason. Loss is horrible but there will always be a happy memory or maybe something that they’ve said that you can hold close to your heart for the rest of your life. Maybe someone came in your life to change your perspective or to help you overcome a hurdle. Maybe they played their part in your life and their purpose was to help you.

None of us truly understand why we have to lose someone that you can care so dearly for but realistically people come and go to help shape you as a person and to create the final person you become. Yes, we may all lose someone or something but if we shared love (which is really a beautiful thing to come across anyway) then we should be grateful for those memories or the teachings that person passed on. It’s so difficult to see the positive in times of loss but we all have our place and a journey to complete. We’ll be challenged in life and loss is definitely one of the hardest but we must accept and look forward to the future.

This was only a quick post but I must sleep now!

The most important songs in my life & a story of a great man…

So narrowing down my three favorite songs is certainly a difficult thing for me to do! I listen to sooo much music but I think I’ve chosen the three most sentimental songs that I’ve had the pleasure to listen to. For the purpose of the ‘Blogging 101’ assignment I’ve gone into detail about the memories connected to each song as well: Image

The first  song/hymn on my list is Dear Father Lord of Mankind. This hymn is absolutely touching and I heard it sang on Atonement, when the soldiers are being evacuated from Dunkirk. My Granddad recently opened up to me about his Father and how he was one of the soldiers getting ready to be evacuated from Dunkirk but was a ‘rear guard’ ( or something along those lines, I’m not very good at history) and instead of evacuating was captured by the Germans along with 40,000 other soldiers. They were being taken to either Germany or Poland. Extraordinarily, knowing his fate, him and his friend managed to escape by finding blind spots of the guards and hid in a bush for hours as every single ushered soldier was escorted to a slave labor camp. The Brits only disclosed information about the soldiers that evacuated to boost morale in the country, there is very little shared about the soldiers that didn’t make it. It isn’t widely known that many were captured and spent a life of misery as slave labor. Anyway, after the coast was clear, my Great Grandfather and his friend started to make their way across France, whilst back in England, a letter had been sent back home to my Granddad’s family saying he was ‘missing, presumed dead. This wasn’t exactly accurate as him and his friend had trekked all the way across France and managed to come home to my Great Grandmother. To everyone’s amazement he was alive ( I may write up about the entire story in length sometime as I feel it deserves to have a place in history) and the song just makes me feel so lucky to come from the family I have. They would do anything for their family and that just shows my Great Grandfather’s pure determination to live and return to his loved ones. It also shows that really miracles can happen. I know from documentaries not many people escaped that fate and if my Great Granddad hadn’t, then I wouldn’t be here today and that to me is just such a crazy thought. This song also makes me cry! For the record, I cry about 4 times a week so this might also be why. :l

Secondly,  Hey Jude by The Beatles. This is clearly a great song and obviously most people probably rank this up there as one of their favorites. For me this is a song that brings back one of the best memories of my life. So throughout myself I was always a misfit and never would be considered ‘ cool’ or ‘popular’. I was always seeking acceptance and doing the most stupid and foolish things in order to claim it. This made me sad a lot of the time because it meant I never really knew who I was or who I truly wanted to be which I think is the case for most people during school but other people made it seem a lot easier. Long story short I ended up hanging out with the wrong crowd as I had known them since primary school and I didn’t feel accepted in any other ‘clans’. My family saw that behavior and attitude was changing rapidly and I was heading down the wrong road my Grandparents decided to send me to private school. *cue death row music. I was so scared and upset ( for some reason, I had no idea why. It wasn’t like I enjoyed the school I was at anyway) and didn’t know what to do with myself. It turned out that once I got there, it was everything I hadn’t expected. I was accepted by everyone straight away! I had actual friendships with people who I actually liked. They weren’t passive aggressively horrible to me and call me names all the time. Nobody did drugs or had drank and thought it was absolutely insane that I had smoked and drank at such an early age ( which, in fairness considering I was only 14  definitely shouldn’t have happened). I didn’t need to fit in because nobody fitted in! There were only 15 people in my entire year and they were all weird and wonderful in their own creative ways! They all loved learning and didn’t need to act older or act like idiots to impress other people. It was here that I really found my true self.

When it was time for us to go our separate ways, when school finished, our entire year held a concert for the rest of the school and sang ‘Hey Jude’ with instruments and we all had our own verse and it was beautiful to all come together and know that we had met people at this school that even if we didn’t ever see again, we certainly wouldn’t forget! I remember being so nervous and scared for my 2 lines but it happened and was amazing! It’s the kind of thing that you take for granted at the time but when you like back you can really appreciate it for what it was. I still sometimes cry when I listen to that song.

After the performance my Nana bought me a key chain guitar that sang the song every time you pressed the button. It’s definitely a memory I hold close to my heart!

Thirdly, I absolutely love Superchick – One Girl Revolution. For me it’s got me back up when I’ve been feeling low and down about myself. It’s a song about being you and not given a toss about what anyone else thinks. It also drives me to achieve my true potential by encouraging me to be confident and to voice my opinions even if no one is willing to listen! It’s edgy as well which makes me feel ‘cool’ when I listen to it. haha Although I am certainly not edgy. :l

Make your life valuable, so you don’t need to chase materialistic products…

If you are always seeking materialistic items then how are you meant to be happy? Materialistic goods won’t bring anyone long term happiness, no matter how much they believe it will. You need love, support and a goal ( however big or small) to create a life that you don’t need to escape from! If you’re constantly seeking more and more ‘items’ then you will never be content, you’ll just keep chasing the wrong things and that is no way to live. Just my thoughts of the morning!

Always strive to be a better person…

Never aim to be someone else because there’s only one of you and you have something special within that is personal and unique to your character. Everyone can be amazing in their own way so the only person you should try and be is a better version of yourself.

A banana a day keeps the Doctor away…

single banana

Forget about an apple a day, bananas are the new (not so new) super food! So, recently I’ve given myself a personal challenge to eat at least one banana a day due to all of the health benefits it provides. Here’s some of the amazing benefits of this natural super food:

  • Bananas can aid the prevention and reduction of depression due to it’s high levels of tryptophan ( an amino acid) which transfers into serotonin, which makes you happier! Yay!
  • Sustains blood sugars
  • Enhance your mood and reduce PMS symptoms.
  • Bananas are a source of iron – less chance of anemia!
  • As bananas are high in potassium and low in salt they are recognized to lower blood pressure and prevent strokes and heart attacks!
  • Bananas aid digestion due to their pectin levels.
  • Bananas are high in fiber so helps regulate the digestive system ( but if eaten to the extreme can cause diarrhea or constipation).
  • Prevent asthma
  • Fiber, potassium, vitamin C and B6 all contribute towards a healthy heart therefore preventing cardiovascular disease.
  • They provide electrolytes which are lost during diarrhea therefore helping you feel less weak and healthier at a faster pace.
  • Bananas can help diabetics maintain stable blood sugars, studies have shown.
  • Can help preserve memory.

An average banana contains these vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin B6 – .5 mg
  • Manganese – .3 mg
  • Vitamin C – 9 mg
  • Potassium – 450 mg
  • Dietary Fiber – 3g
  • Protein – 1 g
  • Magnesium – 34 mg
  • Folate – 25.0 mcg
  • Riboflavin – .1 mg
  • Niacin – .8 mg
  • Vitamin A – 81 IU
  • Iron – .3 mg

I’ve achieved eating a banana a day so far,  and hope to get in 2 a day when I start blending smoothies (when my smoothie maker arrives)!

However, many ask how many is too many due to risk of potassium overdoes etc? Well it is advised by professionals to eat 2 a day, which provides you (along with a well balanced diet)  your daily recommended amount of potassium. If you consume too much potassium you can suffer with headaches and fatigue.

Some people believe ‘the more the merrier’, for instance, Freelee the Banana Girl who consumes around 50 bananas a day! Although, a controversial figure, I believe there is method in her madness and as long as she is reaping the rewards of her diet then people shouldn’t judge. She does mention that for her weight and height she would have to eat 300+ bananas in 30 seconds in order to harm herself, which to her own admission she considers impossible. I have been considering the raw vegan lifestyle for quite some time now and Freelee has really turned her life around with it! ( I’ll leave a link to her page at the bottom). I personally won’t be eating anywhere near that many bananas as I feel one a day is enough to be getting on with, in order to lift my mood and reap the rewards the nutrients have to offer. I will update on how this has effected my well being in the future.

Do you agree or disagree with Freelee’s lifestyle? How have your experiences been with the raw vegan diet?

Top 5 Feel Good Songs, guaranteed to lift your mood…

We all have down days, where everything’s going wrong: that guy you like isn’t messaging you or you’ve spilled coffee all over your new top. Although trivial problems, within the greater scheme of things, they can really get you down at the time. I’ve selected a few songs that can put a smile on your face.

1) Tim McMorris – A Beautiful Life. This is one of my favorite feel good songs.

2) Tim McMorris – A Beautiful Life

3) Imagine Dragons – On Top of The World

4) Brandon & Leah – Life Happens

5) Ben Howard – Keep Your Head Up

Remember, if you are concerning yourself with the trivia’s of day- to- day life (as we all do) just think you aren’t going to live forever so just take a step back and really think, is this going to matter in five years time? If not, then why worry about it now? YOLO ( oh gosh, I can’t believe I wrote that). I’m going to be going into this in more depth in a blog post on inner peace and happiness in the near future! Of course, not all issues can be solved with a simple song and aren’t trivial so I’ll also be addressing more serious lifestyle changes to enhance your mood and well being. However, for now here’s a link to a blog post I wrote naming 6 foods that can make you lift your mood!
