Good Mood Foods… 6 Ways to eat yourself into a good mood!

happy person eating

Hey there!

Have you noticed feeling fatigued or having an unusually low mood? This can’t always be avoidable but you can avoid getting into unhealthy eating habits and start making some positive changes. Before you know it your mood will be enhanced! I used to eat a KFC a day and had awful physical and mental health. I have cut out junk food almost completely now and feel like I can face life’s issues with far more ease than I used to.

These foods should help you gain a spring in your step:

   1) Dark Chocolate – This food is not a chore to eat and contains serotonin, which is a natural anti-depressant.  Additionally, it is high in magnesium which calms your muscles and can reduce anxiety. My favourite is Green and Blacks.

2) Chickpeas – Chickpeas are a good source of magnesium and this can help your muscles relax. They also contain Vitamin B6 which can help the reduce irritability and depression. A great way to eat this is by making a hummus dip! It’s amazing with Rivita or chopped veg.

3)  Wholegrain rice – As with chickpeas, this staple contains magnesium and B6. Other complex carbs, such as, oatmeal, beans and wholegrain pasta can also have the same effect.

4) Berries – Tasty fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries contain anthocyanidins and anthocyanins-nutrients that aid stress reduction and depression.

5) Green tea – This amazing tea contains theanine (an antioxidant) that helps you stay calm.

6) Flaxseeds – You can buy these in a grounded form and eat them on your cereal for breakfast!

Exercise has also been proven to be as effective for improving mood as medication! Although, it can be difficult to get up and move when you are feeling low, it can have a really positive impact. Here’s my blog post on some exercises I do and my favorite motivational music at the moment: https://emilyshappiness.wordpress.com/2014/04/18/top-ten-workout-songs-keep-it-going/

Achieving the impossible…Getting your hair from red to blonde, no damage.

Hey!

So I’ve realized that I in fact have some pretty useful information under my belt that I would love to share. A while back I decided to dye my hair auburn. It was nice … (for a few weeks) and then I became increasingly agitated and start to feel like I wasn’t myself. The auburn turned into a rusty colour and my confidence was shot (I looked like I had dyed my hair with some dodgy £2 kit dye).  I needed to get back to blonde but without  completely wrecking my hair and at a cheap price. Here’s the steps I used:

Step 1: I started using the natural stripping method, which has been dubbed the ‘Natural Hair Dye Remover’. You create this by getting about 500mg of vitamin c, in any form. This can be the powder, crushed up vitamin C tablets or crushed up effervescent tablets. I would opt for either the powder or the tablets because I used the effervescent tablets and although it worked it created a HELL of a mess! FOAM EVERYWHERE.

Here's my foamy mess. Yes. That is the foam erupting over the side of the cup.

Here’s my foamy mess. Yes. That is the foam erupting over the side of the cup.

You will also need a strong shampoo with sulfates in  it. I chose Head and Shoulders (Original) just because I heard that’s the best for dye stripping. So here, for the people who are skim reading.

You will need:

  • 500 mg of Vitamin C ( either powder, crushed pills or crushed effervescent tablets).
  • A squirt or enough to make a paste of high sulfate shampoo, such as Head and Shoulders.
  • A bowl
  • A mixer. ( I think I used a pair of scissors … I’m very disorganized)
  • You will also need a shower cap or a plastic bag… something to prevent the liquid from getting in your eyes because that occurrence is painful and I don’t want any of you guys to experience that!

You basically mash all of this together in the bowl and massage it into your hair like shampoo and leave it on your hair for 45 minutes plus. I must have kept mine on for a few hours just because I like to do things in excess but realistically had I left it on a bit less I probably would have seen the same results. You then just wash it out as normal and will probably see your old colour wash down the drain…my experience with this looked like a murder scene.  You can repeat this as much as you like, I did it 2 times and I know it’s popular to do it 2-3 times just to get all of the colour out. I wouldn’t necessarily do it one after the other, straight away just because your hair will need some time to release natural oils to stop it from getting too dry so leave it a day or two. I love this method as it really doesn’t damage your hair. It in fact has been known to leave people’s hair in better condition due to the vitamin C.

Tips: Try not to massage heavily into the scalp as that can become painful and tingly. You may experience some tingling anyway ( I did) but it should be alright… obviously if it becomes really painful then wash the mask off.

When I first had it done I really liked it but in order to keep it up I’d have to dye it every three weeks.

photo 2 (2)

My hair then kept fading to a rusty colour and for some strange reason I decided to cut my hair short around this time also.

photo 5 (1)

This was taken after the stripping process. Here (although the photo doesn’t show it well, my hair was a mousy brown. The reddy tones had died down LOADS.

Step 2: Get HIGHLIGHTS. Do not, I repeat NOT go in with a full head of bleach. It’s such a bad idea. Obviously, if you really want to, you can do it but I really don’t advise it. The best way here is to work your way up. It’ll take longer but you will end up with far better results. Here’s a picture of me after my first full head of highlights:

photo (1)

Step 3: Start using Purple Shampoo. This is a God send. It really eradicates the brassy tones in hair and will start to give your hair the ashy tones that you’ve been looking for. (If you would want more of a honey blonde, don’t use the shampoo).

Step 4: After a month of having semi – ginger hair book an appointment to get another full head of highlights. After this time you should be able to see a real difference and have blonde hair again. Here’s my hair after my second load of highlights:

photo (2)

I use a purple shampoo regime, to keep my hair less brassy.

CHEAPER OPTION: You can obviously use home dying kits as well. The best ones for highlights will probably involve a cap and if you want to do it twice, make sure you leave an appropriate amount of time between uses as hair can be so fragile and once it starts to break, it’s so difficult to get it in good condition again.

I recommend: Pro-voke ‘Touch of Silver’ treatment. It’s really cheap and they have a whole maintenance range available. I use the concentrated shampoo once or twice a week and then use the maintenance shampoo and conditioner daily and then when I want to deep condition I use the deep conditioner.

touch of silver treatment kit

All of these are super cheap and can be purchased here: http://www.boots.com/en/Touch-Of-Silver-Silver-Shine-Shampoo-Weekly-Treatment-150ml_1047911/

I am also currently conditioning my hair once or twice a week with olive oil concoctions, if you want to know more about them check out my ‘Hair Diary’ page. I’ll be putting up the conditioning masks I’m using soon.

If you’ve enjoyed this post and want to  keep updated on my other stuff just follow my blog and if you’ve liked it please give it a like or a share. If you’ve had any similar dye experience post some pictures or write a comment about it in the comment section! I hope this’ll help some of you as I know how frustrating it can be when you can’t get the hair you want, when you want it. But don’t worry you will be able to get blonde hair back!

The ramblings of a 21 year old.

I’m only 21, yet get told constantly that I’m ‘wise beyond my years‘. I choose not to drink or take drugs and have a perspective in life that I’ve noticed many people around me don’t share.

I often wonder how people get so caught up in trivial dramas and complain about the smallest of life’s concerns when others are suffering and dying. I know this is very deep and I should probably ‘ try to think less’ and ‘be less uptight’ but when you really think about life and how miraculous it is that we are even here; we should be enjoying it, no matter how we decide to. I hear people talking about the most superficial things and dissing other people because of their looks or judging them for their actions but realistically…why? Why must you feel the need to put other’s down? What is the point? How are people meant to enjoy their time on this planet when they are being judged…just let them be.     Image

I suppose this blog post has come to be as a group of hearing impaired people came into our shop today and they were radiating positivity, happiness and lust for life that I don’t experience often. Then I started to think about their life experiences and how they must have had to accept their condition and although I know that they can live a normal life and are just as able as anyone else, it must be difficult. A lot of people I know, would create such mass drama around a break up or a ‘bitch fight’ and create huge amounts of self indulgent, attention seeking, negative moping when really, that’s all they’re contending with.

As my sister and I sell wigs in our shop we serve a lot of men who like to dress as women and they really, really stand out from the other customers we serve. They are extra polite and vigilant of us treating them as ‘normal’ people and not rushing to judge them. They often tell us stories of how they enter other wig retailers and feel so uncomfortable because the sales assistants laugh and point but really, WHY? It frustrates me so much. These men are just living life the way they are happiest living it! In our own shop girls have been known to giggle at the men that come in browsing the wig section and it makes me sad that people can be so close minded and quick to make judgment on someone who has feelings just like they do.

I used to be a very close minded person myself, having been brought up with a sheltered lifestyle and not understanding why people would live a certain way. I try everyday to differ this way of thinking because it isn’t right. At the end of the day I want to be the best person I can be and if I’m judging people for their choices, I don’t think I’m succeeding. Recently, I’ve met some people who have inspired me to change due to them probably being the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met. Had I not had this revelation I never would have taken the time out to spend with them and that would really have been a loss on my part. I believe people come into your life for a reason and I think these specific people have.

I hear you say… ‘but you’re judging other people for judging’. This is true. I know I shouldn’t, I was once there myself, caught up in a web of my own sheltered delusion. You never know anyone’s background, how they’ve been brought up or how they’ve been treated …their views may make perfect sense to them. Realistically, I don’t have anything against anyone I just want people to see things from my perspective, as I’m sure we all do … but if you are reading this just take a minute out to think that we are all valuable in this world, all of us. We all contribute and can influence people negatively or positively, I just hope people choose the latter.

Anyway, I’m late – night rambling again (this is becoming a habit).

I’d like to hear people’s opinions on this because it’s something that I’m not surrounded by a lot. I get told it’s an age thing and that when people my age have grown up they’ll have the same opinions. At the moment 21 is all about clubbing and drinking and things I don’t care to be around. It’d be nice to see some comments.

Keep love in your heart. One day, there’ll be no more tears to cry…

Have you ever been betrayed by a loved one? Ever felt guilt for their mistakes? Cried, not because you feel bad for yourself but you can’t help but feel sorrow for them?

If you have or in fact felt any form of pain because of another, you’ll realize that many people is today’s ‘busy’ society will tell you to shut it out, get on with it and just forget. This isn’t as easy to do as you may think. I’ve watched it happen time and time again, where people have been hurt and they manifest their anger through bitterness and hatred because they haven’t let themselves feel what they’ve needed to feel. You need to learn to forgive and you need to FEEL. If you don’t emotions may harbor within and can turn into unattractive characteristics, such as anger and jealousy.

I would prefer to cry often, not because I’m ‘weak’ or ‘silly’ but because I’m forgiving and I’m loving. I don’t want to end up  a bitter old lady who trusts no one but her cats. Nobody does. So if you do nothing else today just make sure that you aren’t letting any emotions boil within and release anything that you may have built up because time heals and you won’t feel this way forever.

Remember this:

Top Ten Workout Songs… ‘KEEP IT GOING’…

Hey there!

You won’t know this but Jillian Micheals is my IDLE. She’s such a strong minded women and has inspired me to change up my lifestyle for the better. Consequently, working out has become a staple in my daily routine, whether it be walking into work, doing a Jillian Michael’s YouTube workout (link @ the bottom) , hula hooping or skipping. However, often I decide I don’t have enough time  so opt for five minutes of hula hooping whilst I watch 8  Out Of 10 Cats on the TV!

Nevertheless,  I have noticed massive health benefits including:

  • A better sleeping pattern
  • Less anxiety
  • More ‘ get up and go’
  • Weight loss
  • A more positive mindset

So I suggest if you ain’t. You should start (if you want) – Prime example of how I differ from Jillian.

jillian

So if  Jillian isn’t enough to get you on a treadmill, maybe distraction is the best key! Music can be so uplifting during a workout that it can completely distract you from the task at hand and make working out wayyy more enjoyable.

Here’s a list of my  Top Ten, Super Fun, Workout Tracks ( at the moment):

WARNING: I think a few of these songs are a little risque… proceed with caution if you are young or get offended by that kind of stuff.

mad about jillian michaels

Here’s the link to her 30 minute cardio Youtube video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9avonsRVok … I do this one as much as I can in a week ( normally 3 times) and here is her hour long workout – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTT4W8ygJ7w. I try to do the latter once a week but find it difficult to fit in as often.

Good luck if you attempt them guys 🙂

My top 10 Country/ Folk Songs…

Howdy!

I come from Devon, England. Which, if you’ve been, you’ll of realized is full of tradition and folk/ country music. When I was younger I taught myself to line dance and thrived off of my nana’s love for the genre. She still blares the country music channel through the house at 11.00pm! I feel the genre itself incorporates raw emotion unlike any other genre I’ve heard. Country music is built upon a foundation of real life stories/ feelings and reveals emotions and life experiences that really allow you to connect and relate with the artist/ songwriter on another level. Additionally, the country genre seems lesser based on the exterior of the artists and focuses more on the performance and talent of the individual, which is refreshing in such a superficial society! These are some great country songs ( in my opinion the best) so if you’ve just started listening to the genre, this is a great place to start! I’ve put a link to each song next to it’s description 🙂 :

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

1.Patty Griffin – Nobody’s Crying ( Not likely! I always cry like a baby when listening to this song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGlNEbFuN9g

2. Rascal Flatts – Here comes goodbye ( Although not written by the band, tells a really powerful story of loss and is a massive tear jerker). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17VudJ6lr4k#aid=P7QjH0JURtA

3. The Band Perry – If I Die Young (This song got me as soon as I heard it). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NJqUN9TClM

4. Dixie Chicks – Top of the World (Need I say any more. It’s the Dixie Chicks. They are #uh-mazing). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P7tejGaEto

5. Dixie Chicks – Not Ready to Make Nice  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pojL_35QlSI

6. Dolly Parton – Letter to Heaven ( When my Nana showed me this song, I wept, as did she, for ages even after it stopped playing. Such an emotional story). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBq1s1AB2Uc

7. Jana Kramer – Hope it Rains ( I love how angry this song is but is still so fun/ not too offensive!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e0detkCdDE

8. Tammy Wynette – D.I.V.O.R.C.E ( Tammy Wynette is a true inspiration to me for having lived through many unfortunate situations and using music as a coping mechanism to get through – much like myself). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=912DKxD0H1U

9. Miranda Lambert – Mama’s Broken Heart ( Although written by fellow country artists Brandy Clarke, Shane McAnally and Kacey Musgraves it is such an upbeat song that just makes me want to be wreckless and crazy and re live the months post – first love breakup which definitely  included too much alcohol consumption and trashy behavior!) Plus, the music video is hilarious! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yg05svXp98

10. Shania Twain – I’m gonna Getcha Good ( This isn’t my favorite of all of her songs but when it came out on the TV in 2002, I remember being so excited that Shania had made such a dramatic comeback even if she was a little less folky and a bit more poppy! She has so much attitude and it’s a great track). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3Pb3EJY5Qg

I remember listening to every song on Shania Twain’s album : ‘ The Woman in Me’ on repeat for months and months  when I was really young and this is probably where my love for this genre stemmed from. Listen to the album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPq1_downB4&list=PL2aM8CK6Z5RVjCtDd6UIsjB397m5Sxwys
