A banana a day keeps the Doctor away…

Forget about an apple a day, bananas are the new (not so new) super food! So, recently I’ve given myself a personal challenge to eat at least one banana a day due to all of the health benefits it provides. Here’s some of the amazing benefits of this natural super food:

  • Bananas can aid the prevention and reduction of depression due to it’s high levels of tryptophan ( an amino acid) which transfers into serotonin, which makes you happier! Yay!
  • Sustains blood sugars
  • Enhance your mood and reduce PMS symptoms.
  • Bananas are a source of iron – less chance of anemia!
  • As bananas are high in potassium and low in salt they are recognized to lower blood pressure and prevent strokes and heart attacks!
  • Bananas aid digestion due to their pectin levels.
  • Bananas are high in fiber so helps regulate the digestive system ( but if eaten to the extreme can cause diarrhea or constipation).
  • Prevent asthma
  • Fiber, potassium, vitamin C and B6 all contribute towards a healthy heart therefore preventing cardiovascular disease.
  • They provide electrolytes which are lost during diarrhea therefore helping you feel less weak and healthier at a faster pace.
  • Bananas can help diabetics maintain stable blood sugars, studies have shown.
  • Can help preserve memory.

An average banana contains these vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin B6 – .5 mg
  • Manganese – .3 mg
  • Vitamin C – 9 mg
  • Potassium – 450 mg
  • Dietary Fiber – 3g
  • Protein – 1 g
  • Magnesium – 34 mg
  • Folate – 25.0 mcg
  • Riboflavin – .1 mg
  • Niacin – .8 mg
  • Vitamin A – 81 IU
  • Iron – .3 mg

I’ve achieved eating a banana a day so far,  and hope to get in 2 a day when I start blending smoothies (when my smoothie maker arrives)!

However, many ask how many is too many due to risk of potassium overdoes etc? Well it is advised by professionals to eat 2 a day, which provides you (along with a well balanced diet)  your daily recommended amount of potassium. If you consume too much potassium you can suffer with headaches and fatigue.

Some people believe ‘the more the merrier’, for instance, Freelee the Banana Girl who consumes around 50 bananas a day! Although, a controversial figure, I believe there is method in her madness and as long as she is reaping the rewards of her diet then people shouldn’t judge. She does mention that for her weight and height she would have to eat 300+ bananas in 30 seconds in order to harm herself, which to her own admission she considers impossible. I have been considering the raw vegan lifestyle for quite some time now and Freelee has really turned her life around with it! ( I’ll leave a link to her page at the bottom). I personally won’t be eating anywhere near that many bananas as I feel one a day is enough to be getting on with, in order to lift my mood and reap the rewards the nutrients have to offer. I will update on how this has effected my well being in the future.

The ramblings of a 21 year old.

I’m only 21, yet get told constantly that I’m ‘wise beyond my years‘. I choose not to drink or take drugs and have a perspective in life that I’ve noticed many people around me don’t share.

I often wonder how people get so caught up in trivial dramas and complain about the smallest of life’s concerns when others are suffering and dying. I know this is very deep and I should probably ‘ try to think less’ and ‘be less uptight’ but when you really think about life and how miraculous it is that we are even here; we should be enjoying it, no matter how we decide to. I hear people talking about the most superficial things and dissing other people because of their looks or judging them for their actions but realistically…why? Why must you feel the need to put other’s down? What is the point? How are people meant to enjoy their time on this planet when they are being judged…just let them be.     Image

I suppose this blog post has come to be as a group of hearing impaired people came into our shop today and they were radiating positivity, happiness and lust for life that I don’t experience often. Then I started to think about their life experiences and how they must have had to accept their condition and although I know that they can live a normal life and are just as able as anyone else, it must be difficult. A lot of people I know, would create such mass drama around a break up or a ‘bitch fight’ and create huge amounts of self indulgent, attention seeking, negative moping when really, that’s all they’re contending with.

As my sister and I sell wigs in our shop we serve a lot of men who like to dress as women and they really, really stand out from the other customers we serve. They are extra polite and vigilant of us treating them as ‘normal’ people and not rushing to judge them. They often tell us stories of how they enter other wig retailers and feel so uncomfortable because the sales assistants laugh and point but really, WHY? It frustrates me so much. These men are just living life the way they are happiest living it! In our own shop girls have been known to giggle at the men that come in browsing the wig section and it makes me sad that people can be so close minded and quick to make judgment on someone who has feelings just like they do.

I used to be a very close minded person myself, having been brought up with a sheltered lifestyle and not understanding why people would live a certain way. I try everyday to differ this way of thinking because it isn’t right. At the end of the day I want to be the best person I can be and if I’m judging people for their choices, I don’t think I’m succeeding. Recently, I’ve met some people who have inspired me to change due to them probably being the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met. Had I not had this revelation I never would have taken the time out to spend with them and that would really have been a loss on my part. I believe people come into your life for a reason and I think these specific people have.

I hear you say… ‘but you’re judging other people for judging’. This is true. I know I shouldn’t, I was once there myself, caught up in a web of my own sheltered delusion. You never know anyone’s background, how they’ve been brought up or how they’ve been treated …their views may make perfect sense to them. Realistically, I don’t have anything against anyone I just want people to see things from my perspective, as I’m sure we all do … but if you are reading this just take a minute out to think that we are all valuable in this world, all of us. We all contribute and can influence people negatively or positively, I just hope people choose the latter.

Anyway, I’m late – night rambling again (this is becoming a habit).

I’d like to hear people’s opinions on this because it’s something that I’m not surrounded by a lot. I get told it’s an age thing and that when people my age have grown up they’ll have the same opinions. At the moment 21 is all about clubbing and drinking and things I don’t care to be around. It’d be nice to see some comments.

Top Ten Workout Songs… ‘KEEP IT GOING’…

Hey there!

You won’t know this but Jillian Micheals is my IDLE. She’s such a strong minded women and has inspired me to change up my lifestyle for the better. Consequently, working out has become a staple in my daily routine, whether it be walking into work, doing a Jillian Michael’s YouTube workout (link @ the bottom) , hula hooping or skipping. However, often I decide I don’t have enough time  so opt for five minutes of hula hooping whilst I watch 8  Out Of 10 Cats on the TV!

Nevertheless,  I have noticed massive health benefits including:

  • A better sleeping pattern
  • Less anxiety
  • More ‘ get up and go’
  • Weight loss
  • A more positive mindset

So I suggest if you ain’t. You should start (if you want) – Prime example of how I differ from Jillian.

So if  Jillian isn’t enough to get you on a treadmill, maybe distraction is the best key! Music can be so uplifting during a workout that it can completely distract you from the task at hand and make working out wayyy more enjoyable.

My top 10 Country/ Folk Songs…

Howdy!

I come from Devon, England. Which, if you’ve been, you’ll of realized is full of tradition and folk/ country music. When I was younger I taught myself to line dance and thrived off of my nana’s love for the genre. She still blares the country music channel through the house at 11.00pm! I feel the genre itself incorporates raw emotion unlike any other genre I’ve heard. Country music is built upon a foundation of real life stories/ feelings and reveals emotions and life experiences that really allow you to connect and relate with the artist/ songwriter on another level. Additionally, the country genre seems lesser based on the exterior of the artists and focuses more on the performance and talent of the individual, which is refreshing in such a superficial society! These are some great country songs ( in my opinion the best) so if you’ve just started listening to the genre, this is a great place to start!
